A delayed start to seasonal work can push a scheduled student loan installment ahead of your first paycheck.

How to approach the decision

Test the number of installments due before the first paycheck under a normal and delayed start. The difference is the extra scheduled payment coverage to plan for.

Worked example

InputExample
Outstanding principal ($)$18,000.00
Note rate (%)7
Remaining term (months)96
Months paid from reserve5
Cash reserved for payments ($)$450.00
ResultEstimate
Reserve for scheduled payments during income gap$1,227.03
Scheduled monthly payment$245.41
Additional reserve needed$777.03

Models a fixed-rate, fully amortizing loan with unchanged monthly payments. The gap months represent installments covered by your own reserve. This is not a payment pause or a federal repayment estimate.

What to verify

Compare the first net paycheck date with due dates, and check if your cash reserve also has to cover other debt obligations.
