How to approach the decision

Estimate the fixed payment and count the installments due during the internship. Set aside the modeled amount separately from the money needed for living expenses.

Worked example

InputExample
Outstanding principal ($)$18,000.00
Note rate (%)7
Remaining term (months)96
Months paid from reserve4
Cash reserved for payments ($)$300.00
ResultEstimate
Reserve for scheduled payments during income gap$981.63
Scheduled monthly payment$245.41
Additional reserve needed$681.63

Models a fixed-rate, fully amortizing loan with unchanged monthly payments. The gap months represent installments covered by your own reserve. This is not a payment pause or a federal repayment estimate.

What to verify

Check the actual dates and amount on your servicer statement. If your contract uses a different payment structure, budget with the contractual amount.

Run your numbers with the Student Loan Fixed Payment Gap Calculator. For a second scenario, see Plan Student Loan Payments Before Seasonal Income Starts.
