A projected student aid credit balance does not pay a bill that comes due before you receive the money.

How to approach the decision

Compare confirmed aid and net disbursements with charges on the school ledger. Track cash available today separately and use that figure for bills due before the refund date.

Worked example

InputExample
Confirmed nonloan aid ($)$3,800.00
Gross loan disbursement ($)$4,200.00
Deducted loan fee (%)1
School charges ($)$7,000.00
Cash available today ($)$150.00
ResultEstimate
Estimated credit balance after school charges$958.00
Funding still due to school$0.00
Cash available before the estimated refund$150.00

Uses entered nonloan aid and net loan funds after one deducted fee. The projected credit balance may change or arrive later. Ask the school for the actual ledger and dates.

What to verify

Ask the school when it expects funds to post and when it expects any credit balance to be released. Compare those dates with your rent deadline.
