Request a Public Loan Data Correction Without Oversharing
A useful public-data correction request identifies the record and the suspected problem without exposing unnecessary private information.
In this guide
A useful public-data correction request identifies the record and the suspected problem without exposing unnecessary private information. Start with the source reference, field, value and supporting public evidence. A broad complaint that a total looks wrong is harder to investigate.
Separate the publisher’s record from the website’s display
The same apparent problem can arise in the originating data, an imported snapshot, a field translation or a browser display. FinToku can review its own preparation and presentation, but cannot directly rewrite an agency’s source records. Identify where you observed the issue and keep the relevant release or API version in the request.
Worked example
Suppose an invented public row shows one county label on a FinToku page while the source code appears to map elsewhere. A helpful note includes the page URL, source record or line reference, dataset version, displayed label and the official reference supporting the proposed correction. It does not need the sender’s full mortgage account number, tax return or identity document.
This example is illustrative, not a finding about a named borrower, company or property.
A practical research workflow
Reproduce the issue with the same filters and note the date. Capture only the information needed to demonstrate it, avoiding personal details. Distinguish a later source revision from an error in the historical snapshot. Send the publisher a request about its source and FinToku a request about its copy or display, using verified contact routes. Keep the original evidence and any response together.
Checks before you use the result
- Include the page and source record reference.
- Name the field and the value you believe is wrong.
- Provide a reliable supporting definition or public source.
- Omit private account documents unless a secure, necessary process is established.
What this evidence cannot establish
A correction request does not itself establish that the source is wrong, require a particular outcome or change an unrelated dispute deadline. Keep public-data maintenance separate from account-specific complaints and formal legal processes.
Questions readers ask
Should I send a full account statement to prove a public label error?
Usually the public source reference and field evidence are the right starting point. Avoid unnecessary private material, and verify any later request for sensitive documents.
Can FinToku change the agency’s original file?
No. It can review its own copy and presentation. The originating publisher controls corrections to its records.
