Separate Dealer Cash Due From the Down Payment

Cash due at signing may cover the down payment and several other line items. Only the portion applied to the purchase reduces the financed amount as a down payment.

Cash due at signing may cover the down payment and several other line items. Only the portion applied to the purchase reduces the financed amount as a down payment.

How to approach the decision

Build the budget from an itemized offer. Enter the proposed down payment on its own and group the other amounts paid in cash separately to see what remains.

Worked example

InputExample
Available cash before purchase ($)$12,500.00
Target cash reserve ($)$7,000.00
Other upfront costs paid in cash ($)$2,400.00
Proposed down payment ($)$4,200.00
ResultEstimate
Maximum down payment within reserve target$3,100.00
Cash after proposed down payment$5,900.00
Shortfall against reserve target$1,100.00

This is a cash budget. Enter costs paid at purchase separately from the down payment and leave financed amounts out of those costs.

What to verify

Check any deposit you already paid and where it is credited. Count it once when reconciling the written amount due and your starting cash.
