Estimate what you'd actually receive if you break your FD before the full tenure ends — most banks apply a penalty rate cut.

Bank's rate for shorter tenure
Most banks pay the lower of (a) your contracted rate minus the penalty, or (b) the rate they'd have offered for the shorter tenure actually held — whichever is less. Adjust both fields to match your bank's actual policy.

Smart FD tips before you invest
Ladder your deposits
Split a large sum across FDs with different maturities instead of one lump deposit — you get regular liquidity windows without giving up long-term rates.
Check the lock-in and exit penalty
Use the "Premature withdrawal" tab above to see how much interest you'd lose if you need the money early — banks typically cut 0.5–1.5% off your rate.
Factor in tax and inflation
A high headline rate can still deliver a negative real return once tax on interest and inflation are subtracted. Fill in both fields above to see your true take-home growth.
Compare compounding frequency
Monthly or quarterly compounding beats annual compounding at the same headline rate. Check the "Effective annual yield" figure, not just the advertised rate, when comparing banks.
Confirm deposit insurance coverage
Most countries insure bank deposits only up to a set limit per depositor per bank. If your FD exceeds that limit, consider spreading funds across more than one licensed bank.
Watch out for "special tenure" teaser rates
Promotional rates for odd tenures (e.g. 444 days) are often one-time offers that may not renew at the same rate — ask the bank what the renewal rate will be before you commit.
